The Leeds BS started the quiz 1982. The YBS were asked to manage it at the time to be independent and allow Leeds BS to invite other societies to take part.  In its inception all questions were on budgerigars and the Budgerigar fancy.

The hope was to get fanciers together, once a year, at each of the societies, some times 15 teams taking place.

The winners of the quiz would host the following year. From the start the hosts would put on a buffet meal and were well supported , The trophy was made by the late Doug Horton and it displayed the Leeds BS logo .

Clubs then decided to not try to win the quiz so wouldn't have to host thefollowing year. It was then decided by the YBS to change to is cuurent form. Hosts are from the YBS White rose show roster and Budgies have little to do with the questions now general knowledge.
